There are a few tools that I have come to rely on and can’t honestly see me giving up easily:
- SnagIt
- ActiveWords
- Groove
- Skype
- Volumouse
- WS_FTP
- EndNote
- UltraEdit
- Password Master for my pda
- Skylook.
Skylook has just announced an upgrade.
If you have never before considered using Skype as your main telephone connection to the world (your local call number for calls into you, and your telephone system for calls interstate and overseas), might I suggest you do your bank balance a mighty favour and consider it?
My Skype-In number is +61 8 8121 4444 (or in Australia 08 8121 4444).
That means you ring my computer and if I’m not able to pick up the call you go to message bank. Do you spot any difference with how you interact with any other consultants? No, neither can I.
I can even forward my inbound calls to my mobile if I want (and pay faaaar less than if I tried to do the same thing via Telstra, my telco).
I pay mini-cents in the dollar to make interstate and overseas calls, compared to the usual telco rates.
So for me Skype is an indispensable part of my SOHO (’Small Office Home Office’) office system.
Now that Skylook offers improved functionality you’d be a mug not to stump up the $$ to buy it. Truly.
Here’s what is included in the latest update:
- Optional automatic creation of Outlook journal entries for calls, voice mail, text chat messages and SMS
- Improved control over which items are stored in Outlook and which are not (see the “Folders” tab in the options window)
- Contacts which have no Full Name and no “File As” name are now shown using their Company Name if the Company Name is set
- Recognizes phone extensions in Outlook phone numbers and does not try to dial the extension.
And because I have been so busy recently and didn’t update to the previous version, I now realise it records and stores as mp3 by default on Vista (instead of WMA; I don’t use Vista but some of my clients do and WMA takes up shedloads of hard drive space) and audio file names for recordings now include the name of the caller/callee. Pretty blimmin’ cool, in my book.
Mandatory disclaimer: because I have positively reviewed their product in the past (without solicitation, I hasten to add) the very kind guys at Skylook gave me a free license for their business-strength version. But even if they didn’t I would still buy it because it’s that blimmin’ good! So there!
