Regular readers of this blog will remember that I try different blog editors out, comparing them with my chosen editor Zoundry.

I have tried Windows Live Writer before (about 12 months ago) and found it lacking — mostly around image handling.

I’ve been trying it again and have really become enamoured with it, especially once I had taken advantage of freely available widgets and plug-ins for it that allow it to meet my higher performance demands.

For example, I love how Zoundry automatically remembers a link you have copied and pre-fills a link dialog box. This is not the default action for Live Writer, but with a plug-in this can now happen, sort of. Not as seamlessly as Zoundry, in that it doesn’t remember the text you have selected that you want to use as the link text, but close.

Similarly, with WordPress I know that I have to enter two hyphens together in Zoundry to ’see’ an m-dash on the output post. Live Writer has a plug-in that fixes that.

There are a stack of plug-n-play widgets for Live Writer that really do allow you to customise Live Writer to your working preference.

I am becoming more and more impressed.

There is still much more to try, to evaluate and compare against how Zoundry does things, but since development on Zoundry seems to have come to a halt (there have been no updates for a while; perhaps the developers found ‘real’ jobs and their payment model didn’t ‘work’ for them) I may have to look at moving across to Live Writer…

I know that my good friend and wise guru on all things VOIP, Dan York, is also enjoying this new version of Live Writer.

Download a copy of Live Writer and try for yourself.
