Thanks to the wisdom of many, I have narrowed down my choices for an instant start machine.

I can either run a version of linux (Puppy Linux looks really good) or else purchase a bluetooth keyboard and mouse for my Dell PDA (the iGo keyboard and mouse look good).

My Dell PDA is a slow-starter, but whether that is because I have too many processes running on my machine’s memory, rather than a ram card, is something I’m experimenting with. I’m just upgrading to a 4GB compact flash card and will port many of my apps across to that to see if freeing up some memory on the pda itself will speed things up.

Thanks to Tony Molloy, Clarence Jones and Dan for their wisdom and advice!

How about using a (digital) voice recorder, like you’ve just used in the car, and running it through speech recognition software? :-)
