for an instant-start text editing machine.
So I ask the question of the informed community that reads me:
Is Linux an ‘instant start’ operating system, or does one have to wait around for hours (as one does in Windows) if one has more than a dozen programs installed?
Clarence offered a useful suggestion regarding my quest — the NEC MobilePro 790. But the keyboard is not full size and it doesn’t have a usb port. Dagnabbit!
If Linux is fast-loading, I could pick up a cheap second-hand laptop (testing to ensure it’s neither a lap-melter or excessively noisy — both of which my current notebook fails miserably at), wipe it clean, load Linux and a text editor, and go!
Views, people?

Hi Lee,
How long the boot process takes depends on what it’s actually doing, but one of the smaller Linux distributions like Damn Small Linux running will probably be quite quick or you could have a look at

or maybe you could ask these guys

I know nothing about Linux, but a little quick googling led me to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_Linux .
It runs from a CD & loads programs into RAM, so it is said to be faster, & it comes with all the basic software you need. Here’s the homepage:
