Show notes: vidblog 30th Nov 2006
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. You can even subscribe by email! Thanks for visiting!
Goodness, what do we call it: a vidblog? a vodcast? a vlog? Write your ideas on a sheet of paper, wrap them around a large brick and send them flying in my general direction…
It’s boiling hot outside, hence an interior shot today, with the blinds drawn to keep the heat out.
Today’s 7-minute soup de jour:
- Anshe Chung projects revenues from Second Life will hit around US$2.6m for 2006. Not bad; she even intends to double her employee numbers to 50. Mind you, we still don’t know how the ‘Donald Trump’ of Second Life feels about having more realistic hair…
- My new ‘best blog of the week’, CleverClogs by Marjolein Hoekstra, not only gives me a fantastic new way of organising my RSS feeds, but also points me to a free 5gb online hard drive and personalised filing system. Cool!
- Tool tip: Password Master 4.0 for Windows PocketPC
- Today’s brilliant vid clip comes from the ‘What Women Really Don’t Want For Christmas’ Department
- Thanks to Donna P for her lovely card
Enjoy!
Download the Flash file now (28mb) and save it to your pc, or else watch it below (except it’s not showing up! grrr… more work to be done at click.tv to get this to work on my blog, methinks) Or of course you can subscribe to my podcast feed and pick it up whenever I record a new vodcast… err, vidblog… err, podvlog… err, vlibvlob… err, schlobolob…
UPDATE: grrrrr…..! I had to re-convert my wmv file into another Flash flv file (it took over 1 hour!) and upload it, so the filename had to be changed because the other was corrupt. The download link above is now the correct file. Sorry. And I still can’t get click.tv to work — everytime I try and load the code in the post the whole blog just goes haywire. Sheesh! New technology, huh?
UPDATE 2: grrrr double grrrr….!! Now the Flash file won’t play in any flash plug-in on my browsers. Argghhh!!!! And I can’t get any technical help from ClickTV. Right, then — large 45mb wmv file now being uploaded.
Stumble it!

This stops spammers from flooding our posts with garbage. It may take up to 48 hours for your comment to appear -- sorry!
2. This blog runs the WP-Cache plugin, which reduces the amount of processing our host's server has to perform on this blog. The result for you is that our site crashes less. The downside is that sometimes it might take a minute or two for your comment to appear. Please don't resubmit your comment if it doesn't appear straight away. Please be patient and try refreshing your browser after a minute or two... Thanks, Lee

Sorry, mate - I downloaded the .flv file onto my PC but couln’t open it in either Windows Media Player or QuickTime. Adding that RSS feed to iTunes doesn’t pull down the video, either.
I’m similarly frustrated with video formats, Lee. I think we could both use a couple of lessons.

Hi Lee,
Thanks so much for the nice compliment, this means a lot to the person who’s continually bothered by severe symptoms of writer’s block.
With regard to playing back the FLV that you recorded: I’m noticing that installing the Adobe Flash Player won’t do: the file just won’t get played back—at least not in Firefox 2.0. Windows Media Player and Nero refuse it too.
The way I resolved this eventually (boy, was I curious what you had to say) was by installing a free FLV player that is available through this download url: http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=95201.
This player was developed by Martijn de Visser. I found it by doing a search on http://www.filext.com, where you can look up any file extension and find associated programs and services. Full details about FLV Player and links to other Flash related tools that Martijn developed are here: http://applian.com/flvplayer/index_martijn.php
Thanks again!

Marjolein, good on you for your sleuthing, but there’s got to be an easier way.
And since I wasn’t able to see the video, maybe you can tell me whether Lee put on a good show.

Hi Lee. Would love to watch, but after I downloaded it, my Mac would not open it. ;-(

Lee - I saw your video on our (Click.TV’s) admin interface last night. I like it! We never did get any word that you were having problems, but I’ll contact you here to tell you that I’d be happy to answer your questions - just fire away.
For future reference, the general email address you can use to contact us is .

Hi Mike,
I did send an email to info@ originally, but I have emailed you separately and hope that your team can sort this out — I’d *LOVE* for the world to get a video of me, because you can never have too much of Lee Hopkins [rofl]

Lee, here’s a free tool I use to convert files: Riva FLV Encoder. It’s fairly quick, and did I mention it’s free? lol
It converts avi, mpeg, wmv, & QuickTime video to .flv. I use it for the opposite: converting flv files to .mpg. Works great at that too!
A good small player is the freebie FLV Player.
Love & Peace, Clarence

Brian, well, I must admit I chuckled hearing someone mention me and my blog in such a positive way. It really made my day, I can tell you that.
By the way, for those who wonder about my name—after watching Lee’s attempts at getting the pronunciation right—here’s a link to a very short sound recording: http://dutchisms.typepad.com/mh_pronounce.mp3

G’day everyone.
MASSIVE HUMUNGOUS THANKS to Tripp Millican from click.tv who unearthed some WordPress anomalies that caused it to not work.
Thanks to Tripp, all is now well.
YIPPEE!!!

[...] Then I couldn’t get the code for the Click.TV viewer into the blogpost without the whole post corrupting, throwing all sorts of ugliness into my posts and still not showing the video. [...]
