Oh, it’s been busy. A routine server upgrade on the weekend went horribly wrong for my webhosts, DynamicWebHosting, as software was found to have hidden and undocumented ‘features’ (’features’ was a term I rapidly came to appreciate at Digital Equipment Corp when I worked there — there are no such things as ‘bugs’, apparently, only undocumented features).

However, all is now restored and I am grateful for the amazing persistence of Ben, Michael and the team. Combine that with a hectic period in my personal life and things have unfortunately slipped. Like Josh Hallett recently said, the balance between work and blogging is indeed a fine one.

Now that my personal life has ‘chilled out’ a bit, normal blogging and podcasting service will be resumed. Thanks for your patience.

First up, my apologies for the outage.

Your (and other clients) patience, emails and phone calls have been appreciated, the’ve allowed us to find anything that was missed in the rebuild.

There are some more changes we are now going to make, due totally to the lessons learn’t during this last ‘upgrade’.

Some we have already made, like a dedicated second server sitting in the rack next to the live server so that we can switch over to it at a moments notice should things go awry.

The other changes all relate to how we will be able to respond when things going wrong (procedures/number & type of backups, etc).

Once again, my apologies. Be assured we are working to make sure it won’t happen again.

Ben Hamilton.
