I knew it!

Back a few episodes of For Immediate Release ago (I can’t remember which exact one), Neville and Shel and I engaged in a fractured conversation about blog editing software. ‘Fractured’ because I had ranted in yet another of my reports about the various software tools I had tried and failed with, and Shel and Neville were commenting on my rants.

I had been ranting about the appalling ’state of play’ and wondered out loud if the reason Office and Windows had been delayed was because Microsoft were fitting blogging capabilities into them at the last minute.

My view is that BillG wasn’t about to be caught out by blogging as he was by the advent of the world wide web (fellow ‘old crusties’ will remember that BillG famously said he didn’t think the www would catch on, and therefore let Mozilla and its child Netscape be the dominant www browser for a long time).

It seems I was right.

Neville reported on his blog that Word 2007 supports blogging.

Okay; I still think that Outlook would be a better blogging tool than Word — for reasons of Word’s infamous clunky formatting and disastrously ghastly code buried inside it. I’m not confident that they will get rid of it; after all, if their move to xml formatting is the reason there won’t be nasty code this time, what type of xml have they been using for the last few versions of Office, then? Because they have been trumpeting their use of xml for quite a few versions of Office now…

Back to the story:

I firmly believe that Outlook would be the better blog tool, as we use Outlook to fire off quick emails. Quick emails / quick blog posts — no difference. But Word is for lengthier documents and therefore lengthier blog posts, methinks.

However, Microsoft doesn’t see it that way and Word will apparently be the blog tool for Office 2007.

Either way, FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC!

This will bring blogging into the mainstream of business consciousness — thanks BillG!

Just think — you’ll be able to sit your grandchildren on your knee and tell them what battles you fought before blogging became an accepted part of business life waaaay back in time when Office 2007 was launched…

“What did YOU do in the blogging wars, Grandad?”
