“Agnes, get the switchboard to get these VOIP consultants on the line. And hurry!”

There is no doubt that Australia lags behind the rest of the wired world (see also here and here).

Trevor Cook’s latest consideration of the state of VOIP in Australia and its potential boom here in Australia ends with:

if you’ve got Telstra shares I’d be looking hard at the possible consequences.

Indeed.

Interestingly, whilst shopping in my local Coles supermarket with Mrs BetterComms today, I saw cheap usb headsets being marketed as ‘VOIP Headsets’ and priced under $20. No doubt it would be the children who would be telling their parents that they need to buy one; parents tech-savvy enough to know what VOIP means and how you use it would would recognise that the headsets are cheap rubbish, priced at a point where they are not too expensive to shut Mary or John up when they say, “we need to get one of those so we can talk to our mates on the computer.”

I know that for some the nice thing about the Telstra shares is the dividend, but if you own a lot and bought them, which we all did, as a vehicle for a large capital gain and return on investment, perhaps its time to revisit your financial advisor. And if they don’t know what VOIP is, perhaps its time to look for a new financial advisor.

I saw those headsets on sale in the Kincumber Bi-lO on the weekend - I thought is this a tipping point?

Dodgy eyesite and too-rapid reading: I first thought you’d said you’d seen them at the cucumber BiLo! {grin}

Not sure about tipping point — my mum would have had to heard about it and know what it is (very roughly), but definately some smart marketing from someone trying to create an eventual adult demand via the kids.
