An old-fashioned bakelite radio — about as modern as our internet backbone |
Well, well, well…
Australia lags behind just about everyone else when it comes to technology.
The only thing we are good at is giving nearly everyone a mobile phone (89% of folks have one), which is still not as good as the Poms (who have more than one mobile phone per person).
A report by the World Bank shows, according to Australian IT, the following frightening statistics (but no surprise when you consider the low level of corporate conversation in Australia):
Per head of population, broadband speed of
- Australia: just over 1Mbps
- Britain: 13 Mbps,
- France: 8.4 Mbps,
- Germany: 6.85 Mbps,
- Canada: 6.8 Mbps; and
- the United States: 3.3 Mbps
The report says that internet prices here in Australia average $25/month. No idea where they came up with that figure. Double it and you would get closer to Joe Average’s reality, I would argue.
Broadband ‘reach’:
- Australia: only 77 broadband connections for every 1000 people
- Canada: 165,
- Japan: 146,
- United States: 129,
- France: 109, and
- Britain: 103, but close to
- Germany: 84 connections per 1000 people.
We often joke about how nothing happens in Australia until its already happened two-three years before in America and Europe. Judging by these figures: no change, then…
