FeedDemon Beta and the expansion of my information sources
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. You can even subscribe by email! Thanks for visiting!
At a tip-off from the wise and perspicacious Neville Hobson, I’ve been testing the beta version of FeedDemon2.
So far so good, no glitches or crashes but I’ve yet to play with it seriously enough to figure out its different options. Whether I will stick with it and pay up $30 for the retail version at the end of the testing is another thing… I still like my GreatNews, even though as I mentioned previously it has a few ‘challenges’ displaying the beta testing rss weather feed.
But probably the most interesting experience to come from installing FeedDemon2 is the new list of feeds to read. Some, obviously, I’ll ignore — there’s only so many hours in the day one can spend reading feeds and actually understanding and pragmatically processing the data — but new feeds I would otherwise not have normally accessed are now sitting waiting to be read.
For example (and again showing the power of a good headline), I found myself reading the Christian Science Monitor’s amusing column-filler on the rocky relationship between writers and editors. No, it added nothing tangible to my daily job, but was amusing and since I was once a sub-editor and then a writer/producer brought back amusing memories.
All of which segues neatly into support for a point that the young and dashingly handsome Shel Holtz made on the weekend — that just because ‘old timers’ in the blogosphere don’t need blogrolls anymore doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be running blogrolls on our own sites.
As evangelists and educators it is our duty to not only let fellow businesspeople discover our own blogs and see for themselves that they can be more than just ‘online diaries’, but also hold their hand and lead them to other thought leaders and evangelist educators. I talked about this ‘way back’ when I posted about how to begin blogging, and it is why I continue to have a list of bloggers that I consider worthy reads on my blog.
Indeed, Shel’s post has inspired me to rename my blogroll from the somewhat unimaginative and slightly confusing term ‘blogroll’ to something far more intuitive and semantic, like “If you like reading my blog, you might also like reading these fine authors and thinkers.”
