He innocently pointed to transom.org the other day, after finding some useful Audacity envelope information (which is how I have been managing the music volume on my FIR reports for a few weeks now).
It’s all his fault. I bear no responsibility. He made me do it, your Honour.
I spent the better part of the night and into the wee hours of the morning wandering, deliriously happily, through the TOOLS section of the site.
After having asked what a good recording tool might be, I think I now have the answer (which, damn them, he and Shel Holtz have known for a while) — the Marantz PMD660.
I even found the ‘cure’ for my lack of input volume from my SM57 into my pc on the site (it’s the A96F). I know that Marantz don’t recommend dynamic mikes like the SM57, but I am happy with the quality (mp3 file) for podcasting.
All I need to pick up now is a good stereo desk mic, for those face-to-face interviews, and I’m set.
Sure, that doesn’t solve the ‘panel’ problem that I wanted resolved — but then again, if there is a panel worth recording they are probably going through a sound desk anyway, in which case I just take a feed from the desk. Problem, as we say here in the Antipodes, solvered.

It’s at times like these, as Ben has commented before, that the power of the internet just blows me away.
I remember back to pre-www days, when bulletin boards were the only social media. It used to blow me away that I could post a question about a particular MS Office problem I was having and someone the other side of the pond would post an answer, someone I was never ever likely to meet.
I still get a tingle down my spine when such serendipitous moments occur in the blogosphere.
