iPod and 75% of the market - are you sure?

During the week I read via Neville of Apple’s claim to having a 75% market share of mp3 players and my right eyebrow was raised a fraction.
I have no doubt that Apple probably has a large chunk of the market, but I find 75% a bit hard to swallow. That would be the equivalent of Sony claiming it had 75% of the market during the 80s and 90s for Walkman-style portable cassette players.
Whilst no doubt Sony’s Walkman was the dominant brand name amongst all the different players, I doubt that Sony had the market cornered.
So too with Apple’s fanciful claim. I travel with ladies to and fro, talking of Michelangelo, and most of the people I see with earbuds on don’t have those cables connected to ipods. They are connected to mp3 players, absolutely, but not ipods. Sometimes I see the odd ipod, but they are usually owned by the privately-educated teenage children of wealthy parents, not the common man or woman who struggles with feeding male teenage children, children who often resemble vacuum cleaners in the way they can hoover a table, fridge or cupboard bare in under 15 seconds.
To be fair to Apple, perhaps the US or European market does have a predominance of ipods compared to other mp3 players. But certainly from the city within which I ply my trade, a city very often used as a marketing test bed because of its almost perfect size and location, I don’t notice 3 out of every 4 earbuds belonging to one of Mr Jobs’ creations.
Stumble it!

It does seem an odd claim, one which I certainly couldn’t testify to in my neck of the woods. Possibly the reference is to revenue? 3 out of 4 $ in the market belonging to Apple opposed to 3 out of every 4 players.
Bearing in mind the cost of the things, that would be less surprising.
