Your assistant on your $5,000 a day consultancies?Taking a digital leaf from Seth Godin’s blog (apologies for the mixed metaphor), as business communicators what do we say about ourselves when people see the tools we use?

I ask this because Seth has just built up the courage to personalise his laptop. In his post he shows a photo of a woman with a heavily-bestickered laptop at a conference and asks us if this signifies the transition of the computer from heavy iron to a personal (if somewhat expensive) fashion item.

Could your clients cope with the dissonance if you turn up in your nice dark grey suit, crisp white shirt, expensive italian silk tie and a laptop covered with stickers of the PowerPuff Girls, local bands, bumper sticker humour, and so on?

I’ve never been bold enough to add stickers to my laptop, in part because I’d worry they might offend some clients and also in part because I wouldn’t want to besmudge my pristine iBook G4.

But that being said, I practically sleep with my “Best Friend” under my pillow at night! After all, as I often say in reference to bloggers, my laptop is where all my friends live!
