Disappearing alternative voices - should we worry? My man Jenkins quite rightly points out that going to the blogroll of digital intellectuals opens one up to the voices of those we would not normally come across in our travels, citing the examples of Amy Gahran and Elizabeth Albrycht.

True, I have used Amy’s blogroll before to find interesting blogs — Paul Graham being just one of them — and I will have a look at Elizabeth’s blogroll later today.

Tom Simpson also believes I am wrong to be concerned about the death of debate; as he rightly points out, opposition usually causes more activity than parallel views, serving as they do as wonderful conversation starters.

I guess my pessimism is potentially unfounded - after all, radio wasn’t killed off by television, and television hasn’t been killed off by the internet; all that happens when a major media outlet comes under threat is a readjustment of how and what they deliver.

So too with MSM (and in particular the press) — I am guessing that under the threat that the new social media presents they will by necessity adapt and survive.

But what still concerns me is the amount of time we make available to ourselves to avail ourselves of alternative/MSM content. I barely have time to equitably mix my various life roles: content writer, consultant, stepfather, husband, dog owner. Taking the time to read another 50 or so rss feeds, let alone consider how the content affects me, will be an interesting challenge!
